Evening and Morning

Day by Day

“GOD called the light ‘day,’ and the darkness He called ‘night.’ And there was evening and there was morning – the first day.” Gen. 1:5.

There have been days upon days since the first day. These are set times put in motion by the Almighty to repeat again and again and again as the universe slowly winds down, until it finally stops, and the Lord makes everything new! It’s nearly impossible to fully comprehend the enormity of time. It’s especially hard in these times, when tremendous historical events are unfolding that our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will read about in schoolbooks. History is always happening, of course, but sometimes it feels like it’s crawling by. At other times, it seems like it’s rushing forward faster than we can keep up!

But in reality, there is only ever one sunrise and sunset in a day. No matter how many people get married, children are born, cities are built, elections happen, wars are started, or nations rise and fall, there is only ever evening and morning. From Creation until this very hour, every day lasts twenty-four hours. It’s a set period of time, immovable by the great or small events occurring on earth. The consistency of time is a great witness to the ordered reality of the universe and its Creator. It’s also a comfort to remember when the world seems like it’s falling apart.

Even Then

When Man was exiled from the Garden, stripped of innocence and condemned to live a life of hardship and eventually face mortality, there was evening and morning. When Christ was crucified, there was evening and morning. When Rome fell, when Martin Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to the church door, when the Founding Fathers drafted the Declaration of Independence, essentially signing their own death warrant, and announcing to the world a new birth of freedom, there was evening and morning. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, and America was dragged into the greatest global conflict in world history, there was evening and morning. When the 2024 election was held, there was evening and morning. When Charlie Kirk was assassinated, there was evening and morning.

And with each new dawn, no matter what great joy or unbearable sorrow transpired the day before, GOD’s character – His enduring consistency and stalwart authority – is on display. There is no human in our world or the supernatural that can stop the sun from rising; no power to match the majesty of GOD. He alone is always in control. He alone controls the seasons, the times, the changing or unchanging nature of things. We look to Him – and the patterns He has laid out in history – for our hope, our courage, and our commitment to advancing His kingdom.

Moreover, He expects us – indeed, He directs us – to keep our minds within the time in which we now live.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Mat. 6:34

This is not an excuse to only live in the present, disregarding the coming days and generations entirely. That’s what Marxists do, living only for the moment, believing the past to be ignorant and the future to be irrelevant. This kind of selfishness is not new, but neither is it permissible.

“But see, there is joy and revelry, slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine! ‘Let us eat and drink,” you say, ‘for tomorrow we die!’ The Lord Almighty has revealed this in my hearing: ‘Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned for,’ says the Lord, the Lord Almighty.” Isaiah 22:13

Living in Today

When there is bold and proud rejoicing instead of humble repentance, the LORD does not hold back His wrath. Yet He will always relent if we seek His mercy, look at the morning that always comes, and say, “What can I do today to advance the Kingdom?” Not yesterday, for it’s gone, and while it can be learned from, it cannot be changed. Not tomorrow, for it has yet to come, and while it can be prepared for, it cannot be controlled. We are directed to only concern ourselves with what we can control: our actions, today, between the morning and the evening. Let the LORD turn the earth. We are only to turn our hearts to Him.

If we become so focused on the many cares of our lives, the plethora of distractions in modern culture and the mad rush for the sake of rushing that leads nowhere, we can lose track of time. We can literally lose track of the greatest proof of GOD’s hand in the universe, the longest-standing evidence of His character. Our GOD is a god of order.

His character is consistent, His promises unbreakable, and His will indomitable. He even dedicated an entire day as holy time – the Sabbath. One evening and one morning set apart so that we might cease from all our striving, whether it be physical, mental, or emotional, and remember that the culmination of all creation was rest. In the same way, the culmination of all of human history – for those who call on the name of CHRIST – will be eternal rest in the new earth. Only that rest will have no evening and morning. The rest promised us will continue on forever, “where there will be no more death, or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the old order of things [will have] passed away.”

That Final Day

Therefore, as we strive through the struggles of life, when the political, cultural, spiritual, and mental struggles seem endless and unyielding, let us always remember that with each new day we are one step closer to the Lord’s return. One day closer to eternal Sabbath, where the work is finally done. One day closer to cares and worries ending. One day closer to battles being won. One day closer to the day the Savior welcomes us home to paradise – a glorious, blessed, and holy day without end!

This is the Kingdom of Heaven. It’s what we fight for, hope for, strive for, and in some cases, die for. It’s what Charlie Kirk died for, and where he is now. And as we who remain take up the fight, let us always keep these words close to heart, for we will one day hear them: “And there was morning, but there was no evening – the last day.”
