What's The Status Of Your State?

The Purpose

Imagine every student in America studying the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution … 

EVERY year from 1st through 12th Grade.

Americans educated over the last 30 years spent very little, if any, time on our founding documents and the principles of liberty upon which America was built. 

Is it any wonder that our nation has strayed so far from Her founding principles? 

The solution is not just voting in better officials. We must invest in the next generation and make sure that American Exceptionalism is instilled in their hearts and minds.

CELEBRATE FREEDOM WEEK was started in Texas by Rick Green while serving as a State Representative in March of 2001. Rick brought together more than 100 democrats and republicans as co-authors of The Teach Freedom Act, HB1776. 

Several states followed the example and the federal government then passed Constitution Day legislation in 2004.

I was sitting in my capitol office reading an article about a poll that said: 

HALF of Texans could NOT name even one of the 5 freedoms guaranteed by the 1st Amendment to the Constitution…

…and only 5% could name two of those freedoms. 

I was appalled … then I tried to name them myself and was embarrassed to find that even as an attorney, legislator, and political junkie, I could not name the five freedoms guaranteed by the 1st Amendment. 

I knew it was time to do something to make sure the next generation was more appreciative and more aware of our freedoms and that is what led to Celebrate Freedom Week.

Studying Founding Philosophy

By law, every Texas public school student must spend time each year during Celebrate Freedom Week studying the Declaration and the Constitution and even reciting those critical 56 words from the Declaration that sum up the American philosophy of freedom.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed …”

We need YOUR help to ensure that EVERY student in America is learning the principles of freedom in our Founding Documents.

What You Can Do To Help

1.

Help get Celebrate Freedom Week passed into law in YOUR state! 

Use the map above to find out the status of CFW in your state and what YOU can do to help. If the law is pending in your state, you can help by contacting your legislators and encouraging others to do the same, perhaps even testifying when the bill is heard in committee. 

If there is no pending legislation, you can contact your legislators and take them the sample legislation.

2.

Make sure the law is being followed in your local school district. 

Legislation is not enough.  Even when legislation is passed, students will not actually study the Declaration and Constitution unless YOU help make sure it is happening in your local school district.

3.

Share ideas with the rest of us on patriotic programs and curriculum that local schools can use. Upload pictures and links to what is happening in your state.
