Congress Knows Best

Jonathan Paine

Do you know what’s best for you? Do you know what you need, what you can live without, etc.? Of course you do! Deep down each human desires individual autonomy.

Now, since you know what’s best for yourself, does that mean you know what’s best for everyone else? Obviously not! This is patently ridiculous. The different upbringings, life choices, situations, and a million other variables in a lifetime create so many differences, there’s no practical way to calculate with all of them in mind.

Allow me to extend this logic to the healthcare debate. Do you know what kind of healthcare you need/want? Do you know what kind of healthcare your neighbor wants? What about a movie star in Hollywood? Or a farmer in Tennessee?

Let’s take it one step further.

Do we honestly expect 535 random people in Washington D.C. to understand what 321,000,000 people need when it comes to healthcare? The idea that a bunch of politicians can sit around, think really, really hard, and somehow come up with a bunch of laws that will solve all our healthcare problems is ludicrous.

One Size Strangles All

One size fits all policy is destroying us. Laws that encompass the entire United States only work when they are in line with the national government’s Constitutionally delegated powers. Such laws do not work for the intricate, complicated healthcare system that has developed in America.

Think of the television industry. The giant cable providers thought they knew what was best for you, which channels you should watch, how much you should pay per month, etc.

Yet as soon as people were given an option, they cut the cable. Millions of people have switched to streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu, causing the mainstream cable industry to seriously rework its business model.

Why is that? Because when people are given options, they take them. Our individuality causes us to have different needs, wants, and desires. When the free market is allowed to do its thing, we see innovation, greater variety, price reductions, and improvement in quality.

This holds true for the healthcare/insurance industry as well. Government is attempting to create a one size fits all program, (literally one size in many states) and it’s failing. Customers are dissatisfied, quality is deteriorating while prices rise.

Just like with the giant cable providers.

If government would get out of the way, set the free market free, we would see the healthcare/insurance industry solve its own problems in miraculous ways! Just like when the cable providers had to start competing with Netflix and Hulu.

Looking For Answers In the Mirror

It is high time for America to change its way of thinking. When there is a problem, we must realize that is cannot, will not be solved by Washington D.C. Unless the problem falls within the Constitutional purview of the federal government, they have no business trying to solve it.

The answer to the problems we face lie much closer to hand. The answers lie in our own personal responsibility.

Remember this:

One answer for healthcare/insurance for an individual is doable.

One answer for healthcare/insurance for a family is hard, but doable.

One answer for healthcare/insurance for a business is difficult.

One answer for healthcare/insurance for a state is daunting.

One answer for healthcare/insurance for a country of 321 million people is impossible.
